IF YOU SEE OSWEGO CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT VEHICLES BEING USED FOR NON-EMERGENCIES, LIKE GROCERY SHOPPING, GETTING FAST FOOD, ETC. CALL THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW. NON-EMERGENCY NUMBERS ARE:
343-1212 OR 342-8120
I WOULDN'T CALL 911 BECAUSE WHO KNOWS WE MIGHT SEE IT IN THE MEDIA!

I see those OFD employees all the time driving those vehicles all over. The city moved the gas pumps away from them to the DPW keep the gas usage down, now they are still illegally using those cars, trucks, etc.

WOW ignorance is bliss right ? LOL
This isn't about stops after runs, it is about taking the vehicles for personal use whenever they please, but i heard the City is going to be taking care of that!

Thank you Mrs Amedio for the post. It hasn't done a bit to change my mind, but thanks anyway. Nice try.[/quote] Easy there shortbread. We all risk our lives everyday, for instance driving around town. These guys got into it knowing the risks. No one made them do it and no one forces them to stay. Keep the drama down.
When was the last time an Oswego Fireman was killed, God forbid. These guys are certainly acting less than heroic these days. Maybe new leadership would change that.

So, Mayor Bateman send a letter to the OFD stating that they aren't suppose to drive City owned vehicles for personal use.
Of course Amedio fires back like a child would, he doesn't understand, is that his problem? Somebody read the letter, very slowly to him. Thank you.
Discipline him Mayor, then maybe he will grow up some.

Great post (the original). Oh, gee look at the time. I have to go and watch some paint dry, and if there's any time after that supervise my lawn to make sure it grows properly.

First, is it illegal? The FD has to do some housekeeping stuff. I think they have to drive their vehicle for response stuff. The question is how much is abuse?
There are so many abuses that we miss daily. Don't pile on because you're mad about recent stupidity.
Why does the DPW need all these big 4x4 trucks. They cost more to run and to maintain. Why do the guys leave them running so often. Simple measures could save us money. That should be the issue. Are the activities in question bad practices over the long haul for our bottom line.
I don't begrudge these guys lunch or groceries for their firehouse. If it's personal business send them packing.

Ponderer where have you been, do you read the papers or watch the Common Council meetings? There is a lot of abuse of the OFD vehicles. I have seen them using them at a lot of stores. They should be big enough to pack a lunch for work-wouldn't you think? Think about this, it was written the first week of September, in response to a post from T.A. or someone he knew: 1). Police officers stopping at the sub shop. Unlike your firemen, police officers are on the road constantly instead of at headquarters when not called in to action. Unlike firemen who can eat when not fighting fires or on a call, policemen have to eat on the run. 2). The DPW seen taking breaks at Dunkin Donuts. DPW workers are out in the field during their workday not sitting at their headquarters having ample time to eat when not fighting fires or on a call. DPW workers are not sitting around when not out on a call but rather are out in the field all day.

Again, hearthanhome please read what I said. I asked if was illegal. Then I stated that if they were running firehouse errands they should be left alone. I do indeed see the abuse in our city. I see the 9am coffee hour at the West side Dunkin Donuts for the DPW guys. I see police on cell phones which is legal but sets a bad example. I know of preferential treatment and bias in the OPD. What I was trying to do was bring a different view to the discussion. One that tried to allow for certain realities in life but wants to draw a reasonable line.

[please note I corrected your spelling] YES Ponderer,it is illegal to use City Vehicles without permission from the Mayor. Again if you watched Common Council Meeting or talked to your Alderman, you would find this information out. 'What I was trying to do was bring a different view to the discussion. One that tried to allow for certain realities in life but wants to draw a reasonable line' And you are trying to impress who?

Dear Truth, I don't aim to impress. I also don't point out incorrect spelling (too many of us are poor typists and mistakes go unchecked on occassion). I will break it down for you. IF it is common practice to allow errands be run it is not illegal. It used to be common practice for police to get rides to work so the officers didn't fill up limited parking downtown. Is that more clear? We need to know what is common practice and what is abuse. As for Common Council meetings, I quit watching them because too many times they were bitch sessions and I got frustrated with small town politics. We need to be able to talk about problems calmly and rationally.
