I copied this from the Pall-Times on-line. A good comment.
"Fiona, with all due respect your opinion is very one track. The condition of unkept homes from a few select landlords is the least of this city's problems. You thank John for his post, but it looks to me as though he has concern over the local economy here, not just run down homes. Your concerned about tattoo parlors, tanning salons, bars? You forgot nail salons and pawn shops. They're here because they are the only businesses that will survive in this community. Without the money to raise our economy, this town is hopeless. In order to bring people out of the malls and into your "nice clothing stores" you'd better roll it into one enticing package, like the entire down town area and waterway. And when I get off my boat, besides shopping, I'll be looking for a special restaurant where I may indulge in more than just a tasty meal! Like it or not, that is many people's idea of recreation and relaxation, you don't have to travel too far out of Oswego to figure that out! I believe if the new committee in charge of downtown restoration were to combine with both the city and county community development offices, a combined project would stand a chance to make a difference to our downtown area and community. Cleaning up a few unkept homes will do nothing to help this economy, let the code enforcement office deal with these homes. If you feel different, please explain because I fail to see your reasoning. You comment on "hoping to see more changes", any changes I've seen to this city were from a few privately owned businesses and entrepreneurs who invested in the downtown area, with innovative designs and business approaches. I commend these business owners but unfortunately we need many more to fill our empty storefronts. It's all about the poor economy. If our economy were to take a swift, upward turn bringing more jobs & more money into this town, would our residents have more tatoos, tanner skin, & better kept nails? I think we'd be looking at a whole new picture.
