From Syracuse.com, I want to mention the local winners. Great job to the kids. And their parents must be proud!
ENTERGY COMPETITION: Complete list of winners and projects from Oswego County's brightest high school atomic scientists Future scientists from Oswego County's high schools competed head-to-head Saturday in the Entergy Science Project Competition.
The competition was sponsored by the operator of the FitzPatrick Nuclear Station in Scriba.
Oswego Eric Stein, Tyler Spicer, Mike Vivlemore, Ed Bristol, Thomas Rollin Winner: 2nd place model Topic: Nuclear power in a boiling water reactor
Oftentimes people misunderstand where the energy and pressure comes from to turn the turbines. Our model is made to help understand how the nuclear cycle works in a Boiling Water Reactor. We illustrate how the steam goes from high pressure to low pressure, and where and why it loses the molecules of water. The phase change from water to gas provides the energy to turn the turbines. We are trying to show people what the lake water is used for, and that in this type of reactor the lake water that is pumped back into the lake is not actually contaminated.
