COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOSTS HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE DEC. 5
A Victorian home decorated in yards of fresh greenery with red bows, poinsettia plants welcoming visitors in the foyer, and fragrant wreaths in every window can put anyone in the holiday spirit.
The Oswego County Historical Society invites visitors to experience a Victorian holiday at its annual open house at the Richardson-Bates House Museum from 1 to 5 p.m., Dec. 5. The museum is located at 135 E. Third St. in Oswego.
Visitors can wander through decorated Victorian-era period rooms, view the second-floor exhibits on the history of Oswego County, and enjoy complimentary refreshments.
“In its traditional holiday gift to the community, the museum's admission is waived for that day and the rest of December due to the generous underwriting by Fulton Savings Bank,” said Margaret McKinstry, president of the board of trustees.
The museum is maintained as the home appeared around 1890 and contains 95 percent of the original furnishings, many custom-made by New York City design manufacturers. It offers a unique glimpse at Victorian America's fascination with history, art, education and travel.
“We look at our open house as a nice, old-fashioned holiday event that celebrates our community's past. Sometimes we are amazed by how many of our visitors say they have never been to the museum, or that they had not visited the museum since they were children,” said Terry Prior, director of the historical society.
The Richardson-Bates House Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Guided tours are available on the hour.
For more information, call the Richardson-Bates House Museum at 343-1342.
