COLE GOLF TOURNEY TO SCORE FOR OSWEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY
OSWEGO - National Hockey League Stanley Cup champion, Olympian, and hometown hero Erik Cole will be picking up a different stick on Aug. 7.
That's when he will tee off at the first Erik Cole Score For Oswego Golf Tournament to benefit the programs and services offered through the Oswego Public Library.
Cole, an Oswego native and a member of the NHL champion Carolina Hurricanes, has been an avid supporter of the library's renovation and expansion project.
According to event organizer Kevin Caraccioli, the tournament will showcase Cole, as well as other NHL and Olympic teammates including Kevin Adams, Chris Conroy, and Brian Gionta.
The event will be a four-person captain-and-crew format. The cost is $1,000 per team, and individuals can participate for $150. Tee and green sponsorship signs are available for $300.
Team fees include 18 holes of golf at Oswego Country Club, use of a golf cart, lunch, a cocktail party, dinner, tee and green signage, and a gift bag. Individual fees include everything but the tee and green signage. Tickets for the cocktail party and dinner can be purchased separately for $45 per person.
The Oswego Country Club driving range and putting green will be open from 9-11 a.m. on Aug. 7.
A celebrity player draft will be held at 10:30 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Cocktails begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m.
According to Caraccioli, there will also be a variety of on-course activities, as well as silent auction items and raffle prizes.
The Carolina Hurricanes and the U.S. Olympic Team have figured heavily in this event, as well as the NHL, Nike, XM Radio, and local supporters including Pathfinder Bank, the event's “Stanley Cup” sponsor.
“We're really looking forward to a wonderful day of golf with Erik,” said Caraccioli, “and we very much appreciate the local sponsorship support and volunteers who have stepped up to help with the tournament and its success.”
Honorary chairs for the event include Erik's former youth hockey coaches Doug Ackley, Bill Cahill, Jerry Caraccioli, Tom Caraccioli, Dan Ford, Ed Gosek, Paul Kunzwiler, Greg Osetek, Mark Proud, and Pete Sears.

The field is limited to 36 teams, so it is recommended to get registration forms in immediately.
In 2005, Cole, along with his wife, Emily, created the "Score for Oswego" challenge as a unique way to raise funds that would help improve the programs, facilities and services that the historic Oswego library offers.
“I think a neighborhood library is just as important as any library in the public school system,” Cole said, “and it needs just as much support so that children are able to visit at an early age and begin the process of their early education and development.”
For each point (goal and/or assist) that Cole scored during the 2005-2006 NHL season, he and Emily donated $1,000 to the Library's Capital Campaign if the donation is matched collectively by businesses and/or individual donors. Cole finished with 59 points in 2005-2006.
“Erik has been very supportive of our efforts,” said Charles Young, Oswego Public Library Board of Trustees president. “We hope to match his recent success as a Stanley Cup champion with our success in building a new public library that can be utilized by the entire Oswego community for generations to come.
“This golf tournament will be a big step in helping to further provide our expanded programs and services.”
