You can have more fun this summer and help stage central New York's favorite festival by joining with your friends and neighbors as a valued Harborfest 2006 volunteer.
Harborfest officials said arrangements for the festival have been moving forward at a fast pace. Entertainers for Harborfest's six big stages have been booked, suppliers of various services contacted, and food vendors allocated space in parks. But one thing the festival has not yet done is enlist enough volunteers to staff the upcoming three-and-a-half-day event
According to Chyrstal Hoyt, Harborfest's volunteer coordinator, about 600 volunteers are needed to staff the festival. “Festival volunteers do everything from running the stages to staffing information center booths, riding the in-festival trolley system to assist passengers, handle logistics including park set-up and take-down and much more. At this time about one-third of the number of volunteers we need have signed up for this year's festival,” she said.
“We want to let people know that Harborfest is now welcoming back volunteers from last year and inviting new volunteers, so that this year's edition of Harborfest can be the best ever.”
“Volunteering for the festival does not mean you are required to be at Harborfest every day,” Hoyt said. “Volunteers are asked to sign up for one four-hour shift at the festival, although many volunteer for additional shifts. We always try to accommodate the wishes of our volunteers regarding the time they have available for us.
“You don't have to have a lot of experience to volunteer for Harborfest. In fact, this is a perfect opportunity for young adults and others to have fun and gain valuable experience solving problems, working with other volunteers and with members of the visiting public. Harborfest is also a perfect place for more experienced folks to share their knowledge and skills with other volunteers and with visitors to Harborfest,” Hoyt said.
“Volunteering is a great opportunity to get an ‘insider's' view of the festival and learn more about what it takes to stage this wonderful event. More importantly, volunteers have fun dealing with the public.” Hoyt said. “In addition to individuals volunteering we welcome groups from business, labor, civic, social, fraternal or other organizations who wish to volunteer their time to help out at Harborfest,” she added.
The festival also provides specialized training for its volunteers. Training is set for July 18 or 20 or 25 at the McCrobie Building at 41 Lake St. in Oswego at 6 p.m..
Information about volunteering is available by calling the Harborfest volunteer office at 343-6858 or at www.oswegoharborfest.com. Harborfest is July 27-30.
