There's lots to do and see at Harborfest 2006, July 27-30. Virtually continuous entertainment will take place on six big stages. There are displays, exhibits, parades, Juried Arts and Crafts and the world-class Entergy Nuclear Fireworks Spectacular.
The “Entergy Nuclear Fireworks Spectacular” (Saturday evening) is one of only seven world-class fireworks exhibitions in the Northeast and the only major world-class fireworks event in the entire upstate New York region. The display is produced by Long Island based “Fireworks By Grucci,” world famous for their complex and exciting pyrotechnic shows. A typical show at Harborfest takes five days to set up. It requires the services of 10 technicians to build the lumber framework to support 40 or more “firing batteries” used to launch the thousands of shells required for the show. The display is entirely controlled by a computer using over 1,000 firing cues and is carefully choreographed to a different music track selected each year. Bring a portable radio to listen to the music simulcast on TK 99 and TK 105 fm. Best viewing is from Fort Ontario on the east to Breitbeck Park on the west.
In addition to the world-class Fireworks Spectacular, Entergy Nuclear is providing an arts and crafts-activities tent for children of all ages and showcasing a special state-of-the-art fire-training simulator to help families learn how to safely exit their home in the event of a fire. Both these units will be located in Breitbeck Park.
While in Breitbeck Park on Friday or Saturday have your child's picture taken with SpongeBob SquarePants at his special “Photo Splash” (1-4 p.m.). SpongeBob SquarePants is brought to Harborfest by Nickelodeon and Time Warner Cable.
Thousands of children and parents participate in the Annual “Children's Parade” on Friday, which kicks off at 11 am. The cultural theme of the parade for 2006 is the Ivory Coast. All year in more than 60 classrooms throughout Oswego County school children have studied the Ivory Coast and participated in workshops to get ready for this parade. Pre-parade arts and crafts workshops are also held by Harborfest to help students make their Ivory Coast costumes.
While at Harborfest be sure to visit the unique “Discover Boating and Take Me Fishing Tour” located in the historic maritime district. The tour includes a “Fishing Simulator” where you can try to catch “virtual” white marlin, large mouth bass and other fresh and saltwater fish, and an expanded “Mini Boat Show,” with a variety of boats are on display. Another popular tour feature is the Next Steps Display, which offers visitors information on the affordability and accessibility of boating and fishing the opportunity to win $10,000 toward the purchase of a new boat at one of 23 local boat shows. The exhibit is sponsored by the National Maritime Manufacturers Association.
Shaving will never be the same after you visit “The Gillette Fusion Start the Reaction” experience, located in the maritime district. It features live shaving by professional barbers, self-shave kiosks, stations where you can mix your own music, or go for a totally different style by altering your computer-generated image with Gillette's Virtual Style. Prizes will be given away daily at on-stage contests.
If you ever wanted to be in a commercial you can star in an Oscar Mayer commercial! Just sing one of the Oscar Mayer jingles at the WEINERMOBILE in Breitbeck Park, Thursday through Saturday and in East Park on Sunday.
For the third year, Harborfest feature bike and skateboard Demonstrations throughout the day Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Red Planet on West First Street.
Professional shoppers will love Harborfest 2006. The festival's “Juried Arts and Crafts” (East River Walk) hosts some of the finest hand made craft items you'll see anywhere. It's a juried exhibition, which means every vendor had to meet the highest standards for quality hand-made craft items. Each one of Harborfest's venues provides opportunities for commercial vendors and a wide variety of manufactured items you might not find anywhere else. Harborfest also offers shoppers a full line of Harborfest souvenirs in most venues.
You can also sample fabulous New York State wines and other agricultural products at the “Pride of New York Farmer's Market” (East Park).
When you get hungry you don't have to worry about where to eat. At Harborfest you'll find a full range of food choices from traditional festival fare to international cuisine delights. The festival uses a non-refundable food ticket system and handy food ticket booths are located in each festival venue.
For those who enjoy amusement rides, the Harborfest Midway (Port Authority Terminal) offers an exciting array of games and rides from the traditional carousel, bumper cars and Ferris wheel to the latest technological marvels in a traditional American midway setting. The Midway opens July 26 at 5 p.m.
