In today's Pall-Times, "The resolution in question would not allow the city of Oswego to accept any more sewage from the town of Oswego except from single family homes."
So the landlords banded together and got their people in office to make sure that the personal interests are keep in tact. Way to go Oswego voters. Looks like the changing of the guard gave no change. Welcome back to the special interest days of Mayor Gosek.

Was there ever a doubt that the slumlords were going to pull something like this? I can understand Suzie Q voting for it, but I had a little faith that the others might be semi-honest. Here we go again with the corruption and the council members telling us they are doing it for the good of the people. I have to laugh when people like Myers jump up and claim innocence "I just want to say for the record, it’s not a landlord issue. It’s about having the capacity for future development for the city of Oswego,” Myers said. Hey Mike you sound like one of the crooks that you watch. Just what future development on the west side is Myers referencing? Last time I checked there wasn't one bit of interest in any developments on the west side. Where on the west side is there room for this future development?

These guys ALL have buddies who are landlords. Sure Myers can say he's not, but his pals are a different story. Its not what he's saying, its what he ain't saying.

Myers has a cousin and probably others who are landlords. His cousin is one of the few good ones.

There are landlords and there slumlords. Big difference between them. I am a landlord. Well, at least I try to be. My rentals have an excellent rental history. It is very rare when I have to run an ad to rent one of the units out.
What's the secret to keeping the units rented and keep trouble to a minimum? I don't rent to HUD. They never have the whole rent money on the first of the month. HUD renters, as a whole, run the unit into the ground and then move on to wreck sanother place. I don't rent to college students who tend to make the rental site into a party house which brings the police at 3:00 in the morning and irate calls from my neighbors.
I don't rent to two lovebirds who want to play house together. LOL. If it lasts three months, that's saying a lot.
I try to obey the laws and observe the local codes. If I have a good tenant, I don't pull cheap stunts to lose him/her, but lean the other way to keep the tenant satisfied. I don't gouge the price but charge the going rate, sometimes even slightly lower if the situation warrants it. When the units are full, it is more profitable in the long run.
When one of my tenants gives me notice that he has to leave, I usually have the apartment already rented to reputable people just by word of mouth. A good, clean, respectable home at a fair price is always in demand and in short supply.
Sure, sometimes I get burnt. Some people are good liars with lots of practice. These bad apples are legally evicted as soon as possible. It's best for all concerned. It happens and it's costly. I try to learn from it. After all these years of renting, it's easy for me to think that I'm a pretty good judge of people, and then some turd completely fools me. So I just shrug my shoulders and start in with a new tenant, trusting again in human nature.
Renting is a crap shoot. With a little effort it can be rewarding. Then there are slumlords. Another story for another time.

Right now I can know of at least 35 families who are on HUD, who work daily, who live neat and clean, who pay their bills on time and who have never had the police at their home for any reason.
Being on HUD does not make you a "bad" renter. A person chooses the way they live.

thecleaninglady,
Yes, I concede the point that there are some renters on HUD that work daily, live neat and clean, pay their bills on time and never had the police at their home for any reason. Those renters are a landlords dream come true. That type of renter doesn't have to bounce around from place to place or being evicted. Alas, I was referring to the other type of HUD renter.
I understand where you are coming from and I realize that your intentions are pure. I've been in the renting business for an awful long time. I think that I have seen almost all the negative things that can befall a landlord, and then, voila, a fresh new scheme exposes itself. With little effort, I suppose that I could write a book concerning the bizarre things that come between a landlord and a tenant. If I didn't sound too much like I'm crying in my beer, I wish that I could recoup just a nickel for every dollar that I have been beaten out of by deadbeat, scheming tenants.
So, no offense meant toward anyone, but a person can take just so much beating and then be forced to draw a line to lower the odds against any more rip-offs.
Personally speaking, just me now, over 90% of the rental problems have been reduced or eliminated by avoiding renting to young couples in heat who want to play house, college students and people on HUD. Many of the HUD applicants are bold faced liars. They use fictitious names to apply for utilities and cable TV because they skipped out without paying their bills at the last places they were living.
That's my game plan now and it seems to be working. It's too bad that some people ruin an opportunity for the decent, hardworking other renters who would make great neighbors and friends. Like I said earlier, the rental business is like shooting crap. You hope to win but you can often lose. You try to even the odds if you can.

There are always exceptions. But once bitten, twice shy. I'd rather play it conservative and go with the odds. After all, why should I have to flip the bill for a free loader.

I'd like to thank Mike Myers for showing the city how big of a loser he is. It didn't take long for him to join the bitch Sweet, turn on the residents of the city and back the landlords. Someone needs to tell Myers that the people are not fools and his attempts to get us to believe his lies are a waste. He never was much for being intelligent, but to think that the residents are going to believe his crap is an insult. It always kills me when ignorant people try and pass of their lies to the rest of the population as if everyone is as dumb as they are. He is no better than the common criminals he gets paid to babysit.

Its nice to see that the people in the town have their ducks in order and knew enough to be prepared for something of this nature. It'll be interesting to see what other kinds of bullshit the slumlords and their representatives on the council come up with next.

Looks like Myers just found out that everyone in the city isn't as dumb as he thought. The landlords are finding out they aren't as smart as they think, of course everyone knew that. ;D I can't wait to see what the next lame attempt is that comes from Myers or Sweetness.

Oswego should now look at Bateman in a new light. He is not as weak as we had thought. His veto took courage. Good job, Mr. Mayor.
