'HARRINGTON ADDS HIS OPINION TO LETTER WHRITERS"
To the editor:
I don’t like to waste valuable
time, especially at
this point in an election
campaign, but some
things have been said and
some accusations made
that I feel deserve a reply.
In a recent letter to The
Palladium-Times my
opponent Susan Sweet,
as much as accused me of
authoring a letter from
Don Capron. Capron is a
very educated individual
who has written letters in
local papers on several
occasions. Anyone who
has ever met him or read
his letters knows that he
is more than capable of
thinking for himself and
putting those thoughts
into letter form. He does
not need me to guide
him.
Sweet also implied that
Capron’s difficulties with
the city zoning board
were in part the result of
his not attending meetings.
I personally attended
several planning and
zoning meetings where
Capron was present.
During the time
Capron was applying for
parking and driveway
permits I had more than
one conversation with
Sweet on the subject. In
the course of these discussions,
Sweet told me
that she had been seeking
the advice of former zoning
board chairman
Frank Barilla. It quickly
became evident to me
that there was some kind
of personal animus
between Sweet and
Barilla directed toward
Capron. This was not an
issue in my ward and I
did not get involved in it
at that time.
At some point, after
Capron had been disappointed
at couple planning
and zoning meetings,
he called me and I
believe some other aldermen,
as frequently is the
case. Capron explained
his dilemma and asked
what he could do. I
explained that from what
I had seen and heard it
did not look like he was
going to get a parking
area and I asked if he
would be satisfied with
just a driveway. I said
that it was my understanding
that every
homeowner was entitled
to a driveway provided
there was a place to put
one. That was basically
the extent of my involvement
with the matter.
Sweet and her campaign
director Frank
Barilla had an axe to
grind with this gentleman
as they did with some of
the other applicants to the
zoning board. I would
not be dragged into her
vendetta then and I resent
her attempt to do it now.
I have been the target
of Sweet’s supporters for
a long time now and for
the most part I have
learned to just plain
ignore their lies and
threats. However, there is
one attack they have
repeatedly made against
me regarding the taxes I
pay on my home and I
will not let this one continue
to go unanswered.
They like to point out
how much my assessment
is lowered because
I receive exemptions for
being a Vietnam veteran
as well as having a service-
connected disability.
I will make them the
same offer I made before.
Give me back the two
years ten months and one
day that I spent in the
Army, then give me back
my health and I will pay
back the difference in my
assessment, times ten.
