Oswego (WSYR-TV) - Staying warm in
this cold weather maybe a real issue
for some SUNY Oswego students.
National Grid's threatening to turn off
their heat because no one's paid the
bills in months. The problem is, the
students have been paying rent all along.
Adam Marinelli, returned back from
Christmas break to his one-bedroom
at campus heights apartments in Oswego,
and found a letter from national grid in his mailbox.
“I called their customer service and
they are planning a computerized
shut off as of January 29th,” he says.
According to Adam's lease, heat and
hot water are included in the rent.
But National Grid's letter says the
out-of-town company who owns these
four buildings, Sleepy Hollow Estates,
is way behind on the electric and gas bill.
They owe around $5,000 dollars per building.
And with snowy weather so frequent in Oswego,
Adam is worried that if the bill doesn't get paid
any day without heat is dangerous.
“This is basically like a basement apartment
so I would get the coldest, once you turn the
heat off it'd be a day before you'd see my
breath in here,” he says.
This isn't the first time Adam’s received a
shut-off notice either, back in September
everyone in his building got one, but the
power remained on, so he thought the
problem had been taken care of, he
apparently was wrong.
“It's very frustrating especially since
I'm a full time student on the campus
and I start school next week,” he says.
The local property managers did call us
back, only to say that a payment arrangement
has been made with National Grid.
But the utility company says as of late today,
the shut-off notice is still accurate and
appropriate.
Our calls to the owner of the property
went unreturned, we of course will continue to follow-up.
