And do you have some idea that will make our city rich in the next 4 months so we don't have to raise taxes? $12-14 increase on a $70,000 home isn't a lot of money. Everybody I know knew it would happen, the only way Gosuck didn't raise taxes is that he layed off a lot of workers, some that we really needed to. He also used up our reserves. With gas and everything else that has gone up, it had to happen......... We have a FD which is continuing to come to the council for more money, more money.......it is time to get a 50% payrole -50% volunteer fire department. The ones we have now strut around like they are royalty, and they want only the best.

Yes, I have a problem with it. There are other areas that can be trimmed back. It is just an example of not using your brain and taxing more because it is easier. Tough times take tough measures. I've survived 5 down-sizings and seen the cost savings first hand. The city needs to operate more like a business and less like a spoiled child who continually asks dad for more money.
You want to save big bucks? Get rid of pensions and implement 401K plans or cut benefits. Big bucks will be saved. But you would get so much negative attitude from people who work for the city, OPD, and FPD it would never work. I don't blame them but if their option is not having a job, they'd see things differently.

Hey Truth, This isn't a final budget, they only went through a few department heads last night. They have some more to deal with- they bring their budgets with them. If feel so strongly about it,why aren't you voicing your opinion at a common council meeting? Stop hiding, you could have something valuable to offer.

Some of my convictions would not be well received because I am very much against complacency, and that is abundant in Oswego. Change will happen when things come to a head, which currently is not the case. I see inexperienced people trying their hand at the ropes. Right now, as I see it, the time is ripe for folks to try out their own agendas and not listen to others. Look at Frank Cavelli, who is trying to help, and just gets shot down or ridiculed. I am not showing sympathy for the man. I pointing out the cynicism. I don't have all the answers and being an armchair quarterback is easy. Perhaps after a few years of training, I'll try out for the team, but currently I'm still learning the game.

OK...so I read the other websites in town. I think most of us do. But to the point, that sets me off a bit: Some person said on the LION that taxes have to keep going up? WTF! No they don't! What kind of logic is that? Yes, its not much money we are talking about this time, but a little today, a little tomorrow, a little next week...you don't see a problem with this? The state has offered to help property owners with tax relief because taxes in New York are so high, right? So the city doesn't see a problem with tacking on a little more. Am I not getting all the details? I think there is a spending problem with the city and its time to implement some changes. Things got out of hand with the last administration and certain budgets need to be placed on the chopping block. But because it is a small town and everyone knows everyone else, they don't want to make enemies or hurt their friendships. In the meantime, we all pay for it. We need leadership that is fiscally responsible.
