It's been more than 10 years since they made beer at the Miller Brewery in Fulton. But, next year the fermenters and cooking vessels will be fired up again... to make ethanol. Construction is starting on the sprawling facility soon. Some of the buildings will be taken down while another new one will be rebuilt. Construction alone will bring hundreds of jobs to the area over the next year. 100 people will be given permanent jobs immediately, while as many as 1,500 spin-off jobs could be created in the transportation and agriculture industries. Ethanol is a clean-burning alternative fuel made from crops. The ethanol produced in Fulton will be made from corn. At its peak this plant will make 116 million gallons of ethanol. Will that translate into savings at pump? SUNY ESF's Dr. Neil Murphy says maybe not right away, but it's a step in the right direction. “It means a cleaner environment, energy independence, and national security,” says Dr. Murphy. If the plant opens next December it will be the first major ethanol plant in the northeast. Many hope making fuel here will also drive Fulton's stalling economy. from www.wtvh.com
