I thought this was interesting little snip. From NPR: The MySpace social networking site, sold to Rupert Murdoch's Newscorp last year for $580 million, has become a virtual hangout for many American teenagers. But new data shows that a surprising number of MySpace users are 35 and older. www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6209664

Unfortunately, MY Space attracts a lot of pedophiles also. Last night on NBC, Dateline did another segment on INTERNET pedophiles. Men from all walks of live, doctors, engineers etc. If I have a child at home under 18, My Space would be off limits to them. Some parents don't care thought what their children do on the INTERNET. Very SAD.

No one will argue the fact that pedophiles are on MySpace, but as you know, the same goes for Instant Messengers. These are just new tools for the predators.
I don't believe that simply banning the kids from these things is the answer. I do think that education of the children is crucial such that they are aware of the types of people out there and the modes they will take to get to kids. I think that it is the parents business to look over their kid's shoulder while they are on the PC.
Also, it would serve good purpose for each parent to have their own MySpace account and ask that they become a friend of their children for viewing their child's web presence and for monitoting their activity. We want to believe are kids are well mannered and decent, but peer pressure has no boundaries in an unmonitored world.

As I understood it at one time, myspace was a place for teenagers to have some fun and create their space; I could be wrong. I do know that yes user7777 is right. It attracts many low lifes who like to prey on the young. When it was learned that it was a place for young adults, it has become the prime place for demented adults to stalk the young. Please, monitor your children's activity on the internet. My opinion.....educate your children about myspace and the internet in general.
Sorry Truth, didn't read your post and I just about repeated what you had already shared. I agree with Truth.

Truth4All wrote: I found this at Red Herring: Code Nabs MySpace PredatorsWired plans to release code under open source.October 17, 2006 An editor at Wired magazine’s website said he wrote a piece of code that can help to identify sexual predators on MySpace, the popular social network operated by Fox Interactive Media, a division of media conglomerate News Corp. Kevin Poulsen, a senior editor at the Conde Nast-owned technology magazine, reported Monday on WiredNews.com that he wrote a 1,000-line, automated script that matched the names and zip codes of MySpace members with the names and zip codes of 744 sex offenders registered with the Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Registry. Wired plans to release the code as open source software this week, said Mr. Poulsen. He has also given a copy of the code to MySpace. “It’s not a question of saying that MySpace should be shut out,” Mr. Poulsen said, of his experiment’s outcome. “It’s really just an issue of, if you’re going to maintain like MySpace, you have a responsibility to police it. It’s not clear that they’re doing all they could,” he said.
More than 30 million children younger than age 18, almost half the children in the U.S., use the Internet, according to a study by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. One in seven children receives a sexual solicitation online which includes a request to engage in sexual activity, a request to engage in sexual talk, or a request to give out personal sexual information, said the study.
While the presence of sexual predators on MySpace remains an issue, the network has taken steps to clean up its image and tighten security. The social network recently partnered with teen publication Seventeen and consumer safety groups to distribute an Internet safety brochure to help school administrators and parents understand how to report problems on the site, and talk to kids about social networking.
As for the long-term picture, Fox Interactive Media executives are lobbying federal legislators to create an email database for convicted sex offenders, which would be used to remove them from the network. A sex offender who uses an unregistered email address could be arrested and sent to jail—if and when they are detected.
“We are committed to keeping sex offenders off MySpace and are evaluating all functional and scalable solutions. In the meantime, we will delete profiles of any convicted sex offender we find on MySpace,” Hemanshu Nigam, Chief Security Officer for Fox Interactive Media and MySpace, said in a written statement.
Mr. Poulsen says his code is far from perfect. It netted a large number of false positives, and he had to manually sift through ages, photographs, and other data to find some matches. Also, the code cannot identify predators who register on MySpace with fake information.
Still, the code could be used while legislation is in the works, said John Shehan, program manager for the cybertipline. The cybertipline is a hotline where individuals can report Internet predators run by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
But MySpace seems to be holding out for federal legislation. Fox Interactive Media executives testified before a House subcommittee meeting in June that it could not perform the type of search done by Mr. Poulsen. “That is clearly not true,” Mr. Poulsen said. “Anything I could do they could do much easier and more effectively.”

I heard about this on the Nancy Grace Show last night. Of course, the Dateline Series about Sexual Predators has been an eye opener for some people.

One report that was done said that you should give your kids 24 hour notice that you want to see their page...that way they have time to "clean it up" if needed.
I say BULL...Look at it NOW. Why give them a chance to "clean it up"? If they shouldn't have the stuff on there to begin with then you, as a parent, should know that they did put it on there and probably will put it back on once you have looked at the page.
We found out several months ago that my niece had a page that was set up while she was spending the night at one of her friends houses. Upon request, I went and looked at it... she had EVERYTHING on there right down to her phone number! Needless to say, it has all been removed and the parent of the friend has blocked myspace because she had the same on hers.
It isn't that they didn't know better. They just thought it was cool. ( they were both 13 at the time)

Do you know the symbols of a pedophile It's important!Every parent (and child) needs to know about the sick, sick movement known as "pedophile activism". I am not joking. Look up pedophile activism on www.wikipedia.org for more information. They have created these symbols, so that they can identify each other, and create a support network, it's sickening: This is the symbol for "boy love" called BLogo This is the symbol for "girl love", called GLogo This is the symbol for "Childlove Online Media Activism, CLOMAL This is the symbol for all-encompassing pedophilia, CLogo If you see these symbols on someone's Myspace, they are a pedophile. If you see someone with one of these symbols on their clothing or jewelry, they are a pedophile. Anyone with children, please visit Wikipedia's article on Pedophile ActivismNICE TO KNOW THEY'VE BRANDED THEIR MARK WITH SYMBOLS!!! Now we CAN recognize them with this information! If the symbols didnt show here .. go to the site to see them. I have been having trouble posting images on this site as of late. edited to show pics

For about 19 years I have been directly involved with a friend of mine who had to deal with a priest molesting her children, she took the RRC to court in Syracuse. I helped gather names, people, and circumstances to help with her case. I love her dearly, she is the older sister I always wanted. She is currently one of the SNAP counselors for a group who works with Clergy Abuse~SNAP: www.snapnetwork.org Oswego doesn't have any squeaky clean priest. This child rape has to stop! Many of these men might also be involved with www.NAMBLA.org [man boy love association]. There were groups of men years ago, some famous like Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, Harry Hay, and others who thought it was OK to have consensual sex with 12-13-14- years boys. Consensual sex with any underage child is rape. it is wrong. There are many well known men today, who are part of that group I am sure, as this group is growing all over the world. Most gays I know are against this group, but apparently, according to their web site, many are involved with NAMBLA. If you have seen the Dateline series, on MY Space, the pigs use every tactic they can come up with to snare these children. Education about sexual rapists is power for our children, children need to be educated by their parents. They need to know that they need to come to their parents at all times when sometime uncomfortable happens to them. Recently I heard that at-least 20% of our teachers, nation wide are sexual predators.

It is a sad sorry world we live in these days. The Internet has been a great help to us, but as we have seen, it also gets the creeps what they want.
Educate your kids!

My Space plans to launch a new program to delete registered sex offender accounts on myspace by building a database of registered sex offenders in the next 30 days. It will not work though because the sex offenders will then use fake names and fake photo's which will leave myspace users in more danger as they will have no way to check out people and see if they are sex offenders. Here is the news article about it:
While not common, criminals have used the site to solicit sex from underage members. Along with copyright issues, the protection of users from such activity is the highest priorities for the company as it looks to continue its rapid rate of growth.
Within the next month, technology from Sentinel Tech Holding called Sentinel Safe would be deployed. The technology would revolve around a database of the approximately 550,000 registered sex offenders and include identifying information that could be matched to profiles on the site.
"Sentinel Safe will allow us to aggregate all publicly available sex offender databases into a realtime searchable form, making it easy to cross reference and remove known registered sex offenders from the MySpace community," MySpace Chief Security Officer Hernanshu Nigam said in a statement.
The application is the result of joint work between the two parties. MySpace has advocated for amending sex offender laws to include registration of e-mail addresses.
Before the introduction of the technology, no efficient method of identifying sex offenders online had existed. MySpace has also announced it would dedicate a staff specifically to researching profiles, and deleting and blocking those who the system correctly identifies as sex offenders.
However, MySpace says the effort would not be enough unless Congress heeds its calls to force sex offenders to register their Internet identities. It would also work worldwide to have countries implement similar legislation.
I hope they pull this off!

There is no way they can stop pedophiles. Those freaks will just figure out another way to get around it. It is just (auto censor) f**kin sad.
